Jen will be starting in the Providence studio 1/20/25.
Jennifer McWalters has been studying and practicing Pilates since 1999. She was introduced to the practice through Suzanne Martin, with whom she studied while pursuing a degree in Dance Education at San Francisco State University. It was while attending SFSU and going to rehab for a back injury that Jen began using the reformer. There was one reformer outside the rehab room that no one was using. Having learned footwork and leg circles from Professor Martin, Jen asked permission to use the reformer after her PT sessions.
These mini-sessions inspired a quest for more knowledge, leading Jen to become a certified instructor through Ellie Herman's teacher training program (author, Pilates for Dummies). Jen taught at two studios in SF for the rest of her college career. Upon returning to RI in 2003, Jen opened her studio, Jen McWalters Pilates and Beyond, where she established a successful teacher training program. In 2005 Jen became a gold-certified instructor by being one of the first to take the Pilates Method Alliance exam.
She continued her education by attending workshops with such Pilates rock stars as Cara Reeser, Bob Liekens, Lolita San Miguel, Ron Fletcher, Kelli Burkhalter-Hutchins, Leah Wecksler, Amy Taylor-Alpers, and Rachel Taylor-Segel. In 2011, Jen earned her Masters Degree in Pilates from the Pilates Center in Boulder, CO, known as the "Harvard of classical Pilates." Jen holds Yoga certifications through Baptiste Yoga and Forrest Yoga, and her teaching is infused with pieces of these practices. Jen is also a registered nurse.
In her free time, Jen enjoys being with her girls Madalyn and Aoife, practicing handstands, swinging Indian Clubs, and playing the role of videographer and cheerleader to her husband Jay, a fully insured fire performer.
